New proposal to destroy Underwood Avenue Bushland

The University of Western Australia released its latest plans to subdivide the Underwood Avenue Bushland just before Christmas (see map below).

Map showing UWA proposal for Underwood

Under this plan, only 9.1 hectares of bushland would be retained, along with 2.9 hectars of public open space.

This plan falls a long way short of the stated objectives of the EPA in protecting the biodiversity of the Underwood Avenue Bushland. The EPA has clearly indicated that it expects over 10 hectares of very good quality bushland to be protected in the Eastern section of the site, plus another 2.5 hectares to protect a thickett of Eucalyptus decipiens in the western section of the site - and that those sections of the bushland should be set aside in perpetuity. The University proposal sets aside only about 9 hectares of bushland - and less than 6 hectares of this is in Very Good condition. Furthermore, the university continues to reserve the right to sell off these remnants in the future unless compensated by the Government.

We are very disappointed that the University is setting such a poor example of corporate citizenship - what message is this giving to prospective students - that money is more important than the future of our planet?

Contact The Friends of Underwood Avenue Bushland Inc to support the campaign to save the bushland.
